Kevin Pietersen crunched an aggressive 46-ball 74, while Jackson Coleman bagged three scalps to secure Melbourne Stars’ 23-run win over Melbourne Renegades in the BBL 2017-18. This also turned out to be Stars’ maiden win of the season.

Renegades, who were set a target of 168, could only compile 144 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. Dwayne Bravo (26), Mohammad Nabi (23) and Jack Wildermuth (23) all made useful contributions but none could convert their starts into big scores. Coleman, the left-arm pacer, bagged three scalps for Stars. The franchise also put up a good show in the field, capsulised by Pietersen’s splendid effort at cover to pouch a catch and dismiss Tom Cooper.

Earlier, Stars’ sizeable total was set up by Pietersen. The veteran batsman didn’t have a good start to the BBL season, evidenced by the 85 runs he composed in his first four matches. However, he made his presence felt at the Docklands stadium on Friday (January 12) with an array of shots.

The highlight of his innings was the way he launched Brad Hogg almost into the second tier of the Docklands stadium with two consecutive hits. He was eventually dismissed by Jack Wildermuth in the 15th over. Peter Handscomb also made a fine 31. For the Renegades, Nabi returned excellent figures of 2 for 15 from four overs.

Stars now have climbed to the seventh position with two points against their name, while Renegades slot in at third with eight points.

Brief scores: Melbourne Stars 167/4 in 20 overs (Kevin Pietersen 74; Mohammad Nabi 2-15) beat Melbourne Renegades 144/9 in 20 overs (Dwayne Bravo 26; Jackson Coleman 3-27) by 23 runs.
