Positive start:

Fluent batting from Tamim Iqbal as he helps Bangladesh make a positive start. After edging a Lahiru Kumara delivery to the boundary, Tamim follows it up with two more fours in succession. The hosts are 20 for 0.

Toss and Teams:

Bangladesh’s stand-in skipper Mahmudullah has won the toss and decided to bat first. Sunzamul Islam was making his debut for Bangladesh.

Teams:

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Liton Das(w), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah(c), Mosaddek Hossain, Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam, Sunzamul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Dimuth Karunaratne, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal(c), Niroshan Dickwella(w), Roshen Silva, Dilruwan Perera, Rangana Herath, Suranga Lakmal, Lakshan Sandakan, Lahiru Kumara

Mahmudullah: “Looks a good pitch and appears spin-friendly, so we want to put runs on the board. He’s (Shakib) been a great inspiration for us and a very important player for us. Unfortunate to miss him here but we will hope to put in a bigger effort. We have been playing well in Tests over the last few years and hopefully, we can continue.”

Chandimal: “It’s been a good time for us with that win in the tri-series but Test cricket is a different thing altogether. We have a few youngsters as well in the side and hopefully we’ll do well. Last few series in Tests, we have done well and credit goes to the entire team. We all know how special he (Herath) is, he just knows how to pick wickets. As senior players, Dilruwan and Dimuth are key men as well. We cannot control the toss or conditions. Need to play well. We are playing a 6-5 combination.”

Pitch report:

“The pitch appears to be a fairly good one to bat on although it’s rather dry. There are a few patches on it which the spinners should relish if they can get their lengths right. As the game progresses, the spin bowlers will have a bigger and bigger say in the proceedings. A total of 340-350 would be a really good score batting first,” says Tino Mawoyo.

Prelude:

Hello and welcome to the Live Blog of Day 1 of the first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong. Sri Lanka did win the recently-concluded tri-series, involving Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, but there was very little to differentiate between them and the hosts. The challenge now moves to Tests, a format where Bangladesh cricket has been on a rise and Sri Lanka’s on a decline. Never earlier have the two countries been on such a level platform in Tests. The Bangladesh players will be presented with an opportunity to prove that the team has truly lifted itself up, and even without Shakib Al Hasan (ruled out due to a finger injury), are a force to reckon with.

Sri Lanka are holding on to their value as a Test side by a very thin rope, over-relying on the ageing Rangana Herath to bowl match-winning spells over and over again. Different players at different times have stood up but their lack of consistency has been a major cause for worry. They did manage to defeat Pakistan last year by a 2-0 margin but they had also failed to win a series at home against Bangladesh last year.
