Cameron White, the veteran Australian batsman, has become the latest bombshell selection after being picked for the upcoming One-Day International series against England, starting on January 14.
The 34-year-old last played for Australia in 2015 but will replace the injured Chris Lynn following spectacular limited-overs form in the Big Bash League, where he has scored 285 runs at an average of 142.5 for the Melbourne Renegades.
White was controversially preferred over allrounder Glenn Maxwell, who was dumped after being criticised by captain Steve Smith for not training up to an international standard.
White has a long international career since debuting in 2005 having played four Tests, 88 ODIs and 47 Twenty20 Internationals. However, just earlier in the week, White thought his international career was over.
“There’s a vacancy (in the ODI team). I haven’t heard anything,” he had said. “I honestly don’t know. You’d have to ask the selectors, I couldn’t tell you. I feel pretty much the same as I’ve felt for the last couple of years in white-ball cricket. I’m batting with a pretty clear mind and watching the ball and playing it on its merits.”
White’s selection is the latest shock inclusion after Tim Paine and Shaun Marsh were surprise choices ahead of the Ashes. The pair were inspired selections after stunning performances in Australia’s 4-0 series triumph.
Trevor Hohns, Australia’s chief selector, said White deserved his selection. “Cameron’s in very good form, as his figures demonstrate. He’s playing very well,” he said. “He’s one of the leading run-scorers in this season’s BBL, he’s experienced, he’s a very smart cricketer and he’s a good fielder. He ticks all the boxes for what we need at this stage.”
White will join up with the Australian team this afternoon (January 11) and is unavailable for Friday’s BBL match between the Renegades and the Melbourne Stars.
